Causes and Solutions for Acne

Acne causes and solutions are trending right now, so I compiled a list of causes and things we can do to help treat and prevent acne.

Acne can start in our teens but for some it can stay with us as we become adults. Even in our 20s onwards we can still have some form of acne or a recurrence.

Acne Contributing Factors

There are a number of contributing factors that can cause acne including but not limited to.

  • Stress
  • Exercise
  • Diet
  • Sleep
  • Pollution
  • Hormones
  • Cosmetics

Things that we use on a daily basis like cell phones or even our very own cosmetics (acne cosmetica) can help cause acne. Cell phones can carry thousands of baterica that can affect acne prone skin and any skin or hair care product that can build up in hair follicles and block pores can cause acne.

What Can I Do?

  • Cleanse your face at least twice a day. Once in the morning then in the evening.
  • Exfoliate dead skin cells from your face
  • Get Your “Beauty” Sleep
  • Keep bacteria laden things like cell phones away from your face.
  • Clean any electronic devices that you use on or around your face and wash hands.
  • Don’t touch your face except when cleansing
  • Get a good skin care regimen
  • Look for products that are oil-free and non-acnegenic for cleaning or treating your face
  • Wash cosmetic applicators with an antimicrobial soap regularly to get rid of bacteria
  • Never share makeup with another person.

Acne Products that Help

  • Antibiotics
  • benzoyl peroxide
  • alpha and beta hydroxy acids
  • Retina A
  • Accutane

Hope this helps! Please comment.

Algenist™ – The Next Level of Skincare Technology

I found some interesting news you’ll want to hear on a fascinating new product.

In San Francisco, California, Solazyme (a renewable oil and bioproducts company) biotechnology scientists were working on developing microalgae-based renewable energy solutions, and they made an unexpected discovery. After studying thousands of microalgae strains for renewable energy solutions they found a powerful compound responsible for regenerating and protecting the microalgae cell called Alguronic Acid.

Alguronic Acid is an algae extract with major anti-aging benefits for the skin are similar to those provided to microalgae cells – protection and regeneration. Just as it gives microalgae cells the ability to protect and regenerate themselves in harsh environmental conditions, Alguronic Acid can also provide those same benefits to the skin, including increasing skin smoothness, decreasing fine lines, and minimizing wrinkles after several weeks of use.1

Read the post Algenist Amazing Results for more information about Algenist results and how it can help protect against malignant melanoma and other skin cancers.

All Natural Honey Pedicure

Did you know stress can actually show up in our feet? Our feet are in need of some major pampering on a regular basis. This natural regime is the perfect remedy for removing some of those toxins, and giving your feet the attention they so much deserve.

Honey is used as an ingredient in each of the following steps. Be sure to look for honey that is locally produced and organic. (If you are vegan, you can leave out the honey or go for some organic agave nectar.)

All-natural detox:

  • 2 bags of black tea (look for fair-trade brands in stores)
  • Teaspoon of honey
  • Teaspoon of lemon
  • Bucket of warm/hot water

Soak your feet in the mixture for at least ten minutes. Be sure to use a pumice stone to remove dead skin. Proceed to the next step.

Foot scrub:

  • ½ cup of Hawaiian sea salt (or any sea salt will do)
  • Teaspoon of honey
  • Three tablespoons of coconut oil (or any oil)

After combining these ingredients, massage onto your feet, paying extra attention to achy spots. While you’re at it, massage into your hands as well. Rinse off with warm water.

Moisturizing salve:

  • A tablespoon or two of honey (look at the farmers markets for the best deals)
  • A teaspoon or two of coconut oil (sweet almond oil would as well)

Stir together the above ingredients in a bowl. Place the bowl in a larger vat of warm water to heat the honey/oil mixture as you detox and scrub. Slather onto your feet and read a magazine for 10-15 minutes. You can wrap those puppies up in saran wrap or old socks for an extra touch. When the time is up, rinse off thoroughly with warm water and your favorite gentle organic soap.

Moisturize those deserving feet with shea butter and slip into some fuzzy slippers. Enjoy!

Tips for Healthy Skin

Let’s look at some easy ways to look younger, slow the aging process, get help for dry skin, skin elasticity and skin protection.

Keeping in mind the words all natural.

The best ingredients for your skin are the simplest ones.

Look for basic ingredients on labels such as water, glycerin, herbal extracts, plant oils, and beeswax….just to name a few.

Healthy Skin Care

Help for Dry Skin

We cannot stress enough how important drinking lots of water is for the health and beauty of our skin and the entire body.

8 glasses a day at least, just for regular maintenance, more during times of strenuous exercise.

Vitamin E is very important for helping dry skin.  It can be taken as capsules to help from the inside and used as rich emollient cream to smooth on the skin to help on the outside.

Other helpful supplements to increase moisture include Flaxseed Oil, Omega 3 and Primrose Oil.

All beneficial and nutricious for our skin.

Try moisturizing facial masks with nourishing ingredients especially for dry skin.

An easy mask to try is the Peach Mask. Mash a fresh peach, mix with just enough warm olive oil to form a spreadable paste.  Smooth on clean wet skin, leave on for 15 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water.  Afterwards use a moisturizer suitable for your skin type.

Improve Elasticity

Hydrate…hydrate…hydrate…and moisturize!!!   Skin elasticity increases with the increase of hydration within the layers of skin.  This can be achieved by taking in lots of water and applying moisturizer to the skin in the form of moisturizing masks and just our everyday moisturizer we apply just before makeup.

Also, as previously mentioned for dry skin, taking supplements is an easy way to improve elasticity in the form of Flaxseed Oil, Omega 3 and Primrose Oil.

Importance of Exfoliation

Removing the oldest dead skin cells is the reason and process of all facials.  This removal unclogs pores, keeps skin clean and reduces acne breakouts. To achieve exfoliation,  abrasives for the skin include sugar or salt crystals, crushed almonds, oatmeal, cornmeal and micro-bead facial scrubs to mention a few.  These ingredients can be made into cleansing facial scrubs.

Dry brushing is another effective method to help improve your skins health and appearance.

Skin Protection

Here’s a few important skin tips to protect skin and keep it looking younger and healthier.

1. Limit sun exposure which causes many types of aging skin damage:

  • age spots
  • wrinkles
  • freckles
  • skin cancer
  • benign growths

Stay indoors when the sun is most intense, usually between 10am and 3pm.  Apply sunscreen regularly.

2. Stay hydrated. Keeping skin moist is essential to protect skin.  Drink lots of water, use moisturizer according to your skin type. Take warm showers and baths for 15 minutes.  Hot water removes moisture from our skin.

3. Use gentle skin care.  Nothing too abrasive for your skin type.  The exfoliating process should be gentle and nourishing and products used should be mild not irritating for sensitive skin.

Try some gentle and nourishing Natural Skin Care Recipes.

4. Pay special attention to moles, freckles and growths.  See your doctor if you notice any changes.  Prompt attention can usually reduce any associated problems.

Final note:  Taking good care of our skin from the outside and nourishing from the inside, skin protection is easy.  Love, protect and care for the skin we’re in!!

Dry Brushing Skin Massage and Exfoliation

Is your aging skin becoming rough and dry?

Naturally as we age it becomes more difficult for our skin to produce protective fibrous proteins or retain moisture, and our skin begins to become rough and dry from the natural process of uneven skin erosion.

The process of dry brush exfoliation removes the rough and dry outer layer of skin to reveal new younger skin.

Dry brushing helps your skin by uncloging pores alowing your skin to breath, thus increasing your skins ability to absorb vital nutrients and flush out harmful toxins – this helps increase your skins ability to begin producing more new skin cells.

This practice of massaging and exfoliating the skin will help improve your skins health and overall appearance.

In addition to exfoliating your dead skin cells and removing barriers to toxin excretion, dry brushing is also wonderful for lymph vessels and capillaries.

Dry brushing should be done using strokes that go towards the heart, aiding in the body’s blood circulation.

This is why many dry brushing enthusiasts feel so refreshed and invigorated after a brushing session, because their circulation improves.

Starting out gently is advised and then as you get used to the practice you can brush more vigorously.

Dry brushing also massages the lymph nodes and gets them functioning as well. Our lymph nodes are responsible for filtering and removing invading organisms and abnormal cells as part of our immune system.

Massaging them to encourage better functionality can have a big impact on our health and our ability to keep from getting sick.

Dry Brush Selection

You will need to select a good brush that will gently brush and massage your skin. A good dry brush for exfoliation and massaging can run anywhere from a few dollars upwards too $250 for electric brushes like the CLARISONIC Plus.

Brushes with long handles are the best since you will be exfoliating all of your body including hard to reach places like your back.

Dry Brushing Easy Steps

Dry brush exfoliation involves taking a soft bristled brush, similar to what you use on your hair except with a long handle, and brushing it across your whole body in a massage like fashion. There are also special gloves that can be used to dry brush.

The best time to dry brush is usually before you shower and while your skin is dry (hence dry brushing).

Our bodies form a new top layer of skin every 24 hours or so.

Dry brushing helps to shred off the skin’s topmost layer allowing the softer, smoother, skin below to surface and breath.

Follow these easy steps:

  1. Make sure your skin is dry and stand in shower with water off.
  2. Starting with your feet use small gentle circular movements and brush upwards moving towards your heart. Make sure to avoid any skin sores, open wounds or rashes.
  3. Brush one leg at a time gently moving upwards in small circular movements. Avoid sensitive places like your genitalia.
  4. Once you have completed both legs, brush the fingertips of each arm. Again small cirular movements and brush up your arms towards your heart.
  5. Begin brushing your lower back and brush towards your stomach. Then brush upwards towards your heart.
  6. Starting at your stomach brush upwards towards your heart. Avoid sensitive areas like your breast or nipples.
  7. When finished shower as normal.

Dry Brushing Tips

  • Start out softly at first to avoid soreness and gradually apply more pressure over time.
  • Be careful not to brush over open wounds and cuts or rashes.
  • Use brush strokes that go towards the heart. The exception to this is when you are brushing over the stomach, when you should brush in a clockwise fashion to aid digestion.
  • Wash your dry brush after every use to wash off dead skin cells.
  • Brush when the skin is dry and then shower afterwards to wash off any remaining dead skin cells.
  • Use natural bristles if possible and brushes made with sustainable materials such as ethically harvested wood or bamboo.
  • If your skin is dry, rub in natural oils like Jojoba afterwards. It will soften the skin and it won’t clog pores.
  • Brush once or twice a week for best results.
